Saying Yes to God When Nothing Makes Sense
Saying yes to God is one of the most courageous acts a person can offer — especially when the path ahead is shrouded in uncertainty and His instructions seem to contradict every natural instinct you have.

Reflection
Consider Mary for a moment. She was a young woman living an ordinary life in Nazareth when an angel appeared and turned everything upside down. The announcement she received — that she would carry the Son of God — carried no tidy explanation, no promise of easy acceptance from those around her, and no map for what came next. And yet, she answered: “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38, NIV). Her yes was not born of complete understanding. It was born of trust.
What strikes us about Mary’s surrender is its quietness. There was no dramatic negotiation, no demand for further details. She simply yielded to a God whose ways she could not fully trace. This is the kind of faith that Isaiah 55:8-9 describes — a faith that acknowledges the vast, holy distance between God’s wisdom and our own, and rather than shrinking back from that gap, steps forward into it with open hands. God’s thoughts are not inferior versions of our thoughts. They are categorically higher, infinitely wiser, and orientated towards an eternal good we cannot yet see.
Trusting God’s plan above your own understanding is not passive resignation. It is an act of radical, daily worship. Every time you choose to obey when obedience feels costly, every time you release a situation you cannot control, every time you whisper “Your will, not mine” — you are declaring that God is God and you are not. That declaration is holy. It is the same spirit that carried Mary through the bewildering, beautiful story God was writing through her life, and it is the same spirit He invites you to carry today.
Cultivating a posture of surrender begins with honest acknowledgement. You do not need to pretend that God’s instructions feel comfortable or that the silence makes sense. What you can do is return, again and again, to the truth that the One giving the instructions is perfectly good, perfectly wise, and perfectly faithful. His track record — from creation to resurrection — is one of breathtaking trustworthiness. When you anchor your heart in who He is rather than what you can see, saying yes to God becomes less about having answers and more about knowing the One who holds them.
Prayer
Lord, I confess that I am often tempted to wait for understanding before I offer You my obedience. I want the plan to make sense before I say yes. But today I come to You with open hands, choosing to trust that Your ways are higher than mine — even when I cannot trace them. Give me the quiet courage that Mary had. Settle my anxious heart with the truth of who You are. Help me to surrender not just in the big moments, but in the small, daily choices where trust is built. May my yes to You be a form of worship, offered freely and without condition. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
