The Story
She walked into the room carrying everything she had. The alabaster jar in her hands held perfume worth a year’s wages — a lifetime of saving, perhaps a treasure kept for a future that would never come. The disciples reclined at the table with Jesus, the air thick with tension, the shadow of betrayal only days away. And yet she moved through it all, broke the jar open, and poured every drop over the head of the Son of God. No words are recorded. No explanation given. Just the scent of pure nard filling the room, and the sound of silence breaking into criticism.
The woman who anointed Jesus did not defend herself when the disciples turned on her. She did not argue her case or justify the cost. She had come to worship, and she had worshipped. What happened next, however, would echo through every century that followed. Jesus spoke up — not just to defend her, but to make a promise unlike any other He ever made about a single individual’s act of faith.
The Biblical Truth
“Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.” Matthew 26:13
This is one of the most breathtaking statements Jesus ever made. He did not promise that generals would be remembered, or kings, or the learned teachers of the law. He promised that this woman — unnamed in Matthew’s account, criticised by those closest to Him, and misunderstood in the moment — would be remembered wherever the gospel reached. Two thousand years later, on every continent, in virtually every language on earth, her story is still being told. Jesus spoke, and it became permanently, indestructibly true.
What she did was extravagant by any measure, and the disciples called it wasteful. But Jesus saw it entirely differently. He saw a heart that understood something the others had not yet grasped — that He was about to die, and that this moment, this anointing, was a sacred preparation. Her act of worship was prophetic without her even knowing it. She gave everything she had to the One who was about to give everything He had. In God’s economy, that kind of devotion is never wasted. It is preserved forever.
Living It Out
It is easy to feel that what you offer to Jesus goes unnoticed. The early morning prayers spoken in a quiet house before anyone else is awake. The worship sung through tears in the car on the way to a hard day. The small act of kindness done in His name with no audience, no applause, and no record kept by human hands. The world does not measure these things. But Jesus does. He saw one woman’s extravagant love in a crowded room and said: this will not be forgotten. If He said that about her, what might He be saying about you in the unseen places where you pour yourself out for Him?
Your faithful devotion to Jesus — however quiet, however criticised, however misunderstood by those around you — is being woven into a story far greater than you can currently see. The alabaster jar she broke cannot be put back together. What was poured out cannot be reclaimed. And that is the very nature of genuine worship: it costs something real, it cannot be taken back, and in the hands of Jesus, it becomes something eternal. You may never know this side of heaven what your faithfulness has produced. But take heart. The One who remembered her has not stopped watching, and He has not stopped keeping count.
You Are Not Alone
Perhaps you have felt like her — misunderstood in your devotion, dismissed in your generosity, quietly faithful in a room that did not understand what you were doing or why. You are in extraordinary company. Jesus is not indifferent to what you offer Him. He is the same Lord who silenced a room full of critics to honour one woman’s act of love, and He is the same Lord who sees you today. Nothing done for Him in sincerity and love is ever truly unnamed, unnoticed, or unrewarded. He remembers. He always has. He always will.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that You see every act of love offered to You in faith, even when no one else does. Forgive me for the times I have held back my worship because I feared the cost or the criticism. Like the woman who broke her alabaster jar, help me to pour myself out before You without reservation, trusting that what I give to You is never wasted. May my life be an offering that pleases You. I surrender every unseen moment to Your hands, knowing that You are faithful to remember what I cannot yet fully understand. In Your name, Amen.
If this post has stirred something in your heart, take a moment right now to respond to God — even if it is just a whispered prayer or a quiet act of worship. He is already watching, and He is already moved by your faithfulness. Share this with someone who needs to know their devotion to Jesus is not going unseen.
