Five Loaves and a Crowd of Doubts: Handing Jesus Your Not Enough

Five Loaves and a Crowd of Doubts: When You Feel Like You’re Not Enough for God

There is a moment most of us know well — standing before an overwhelming need, looking down at what little we have, and quietly concluding that what we carry simply cannot be enough for what God is asking of us.

Key Scripture

“Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” John 6:9

Reflection

Notice what Andrew does in this verse. He does not walk away. He does not pretend the boy does not exist. He brings the small gift forward — and in the very same breath, he voices his doubt about it. “How far will they go among so many?” That question was not a declaration of unbelief. It was the honest cry of a man doing his best to trust whilst his eyes were still fixed on the impossible arithmetic of the situation.

This is an important distinction we must not rush past. Andrew’s honesty before Jesus was not faithlessness — it was actually a form of surrender. He was not hiding the lunch away and waiting until he had something more impressive to offer. He presented what was real, doubts and all, and placed it into the hands of Jesus. There is something quietly courageous about that. God does not ask us to pretend our resources are greater than they are. He asks us to bring what we actually have to the One who is actually sufficient.

So often, however, we do the opposite. We tuck away the thing that feels embarrassingly small — the fragile faith, the limited time, the exhausted prayer life, the tiny offering we fear will only highlight how far short we fall. We tell ourselves we will surrender it to God once it looks a little more worthy. But Jesus does not multiply what we hide from Him. He multiplies what we surrender to Him, even when that surrender is reluctant, halting, and accompanied by a honest “but how far will this go?” He is not offended by our uncertainty. He is simply waiting for us to open our hands.

When the boy’s lunch was placed into Jesus’ hands, something extraordinary happened — not because the loaves and fish were impressive, but because Jesus received them and gave thanks over them. The multiplication was entirely His work. Your role and mine is not to arrive with abundance. Our role is to stop clutching our scarcity and to lay it before the One whose blessing transforms ordinary insufficiency into overflowing provision. Five loaves fed thousands, and there were twelve baskets left over. Twelve. One for every doubting disciple, perhaps — a tangible reminder that with Jesus, your “not enough” is never the final word.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I confess that I have been holding back the very thing You are waiting to bless. I have looked at what I have and decided it was too small, too broken, or too ordinary for You to work with. Forgive me for the times I have hidden my insufficiency rather than brought it to Your feet. Today, like Andrew, I bring it forward — doubts and all. I do not fully understand how You will use what I place in Your hands, but I trust that You are enough where I am not. Take what I have. Give thanks over it. Multiply it for Your glory. I surrender my scarcity to You now, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Today’s Action Step

Take a few quiet moments today to identify one specific area of scarcity — a relationship, a calling, a financial need, a spiritual discipline — that you have been withholding from God because it felt too small or too broken to offer. Write it down, pray Andrew’s prayer over it (“Here it is, Lord — but how far will it go?”), and then consciously place it into God’s hands. Come back to this moment throughout the week as a reminder that you have surrendered it, and watch for the ways He begins to move.

If this devotional resonated with you, share it with someone who needs to be reminded that Jesus is not waiting for them to have more — He is waiting for them to surrender what they already have. And if you feel led, leave a comment below: what is the “five loaves” you are handing to Jesus this week?
