When Jesus Calls You by Name

Reflection
Mary Magdalene had stood at the cross. She had watched the burial. She had returned to the tomb before dawn, driven by grief and love, and found it empty. She wept. She looked inside. She even spoke to what she thought was the gardener, pleading for the body of her Lord. And then — one word. Her name. That single syllable, spoken by the risen Christ, cut through her confusion and sorrow like morning light through darkness.
What is remarkable here is not only that Jesus was alive. It is how He chose to reveal that life. He did not appear first to the religious authorities or stage a dramatic public entrance into Jerusalem. He spoke a woman’s name in a garden. The resurrection — the most cosmic, history-shattering event since creation itself — was announced personally, quietly, and with extraordinary tenderness. Jesus rises and immediately turns towards an individual. He turns towards Mary. He turns towards a name.
This tells us something profound about the nature of the risen Christ. He is not a distant theological concept or a figure confined to ancient history. He is the Good Shepherd who, as He Himself declared in John 10:3, “calls his own sheep by name.” The resurrection did not change that intimacy — it vindicated it and made it eternal. The One who conquered death still stoops to speak your name. He still knows the sound of your weeping. He still meets you in the garden of your grief or confusion or quiet longing.
Perhaps you have been searching for Jesus in all the expected places — in arguments, in evidence, in theological certainty — and have not yet found the peace you were hoping for. Mary’s encounter invites you to stop and be still. She did not recognise the risen Jesus by sight. She recognised Him by His voice. The invitation today is not to understand everything, but simply to listen. To let the risen Christ speak your name into the silence of your heart. When Jesus calls you by name, everything shifts. You are not a crowd. You are not a category. You are known.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess that I often search for You in noise and busyness, and miss You standing quietly nearby. Thank You that on resurrection morning You did not forget Mary — and You have not forgotten me. You know my name. You know my grief, my doubts, and the longings I struggle to put into words. Risen Saviour, speak my name today. Help me to recognise Your voice above every other voice clamouring for my attention. Give me the faith of Mary — to turn towards You and find You alive, present, and near. I receive the truth that Your resurrection is not only history; it is personal. It is for me. Amen.
