God Called You by Name
Before the world had a chance to label you, measure you, or decide what you were worth, God had already spoken your name — and that changes everything about how you see yourself.

Reflection
There is something deeply moving about being called by name. It is not a general announcement into a crowd — it is a personal, deliberate act of recognition. When God speaks these words through Isaiah, He is not addressing a nation in abstract terms. He is speaking to people who felt lost, exiled, and forgotten. He is reaching through the noise of their circumstances and saying: I know who you are. You are mine.
The world has its own ways of naming us. It names us by our productivity — what we produce, what we earn, what we achieve. It names us by our appearance — whether we measure up to whatever standard is fashionable this season. It names us by our failures — the mistakes that follow us, the relationships that broke, the seasons where we fell short. These names carry weight, and if we are honest, most of us have carried at least one of them far longer than we should have. But here is the liberating truth: none of those names came first. God’s name for you came before any of them.
Isaiah 43:1 opens with the word “but” — a beautiful, redirecting conjunction. It arrives as a correction to every lie you have believed about yourself. Before God tells you not to fear, He reminds you of two things: He created you, and He formed you. These are not passive or accidental acts. The Hebrew words carry the sense of intentional craftsmanship — the same care a potter gives to clay, the same precision an artist brings to a canvas. You were not an afterthought. You were not a mistake. You were shaped on purpose, by a God who already knew your name.
To be called by name by God is to be fully known and fully loved at the same time — and that combination is something the world simply cannot offer. Human approval is conditional. It shifts with our performance, our mood, our circumstances. But God’s calling over your life is rooted in His own unchanging character. He did not name you because you earned it. He named you because He made you, redeemed you, and claimed you as His own. That is your truest identity — not what the world has spoken over you, but what the Creator of heaven and earth has declared.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that You know my name — not just as a fact, but as a declaration of ownership and love. Forgive me for the times I have looked to the world to tell me who I am, and found only disappointment. Help me to hear Your voice above every other voice today. Remind me that I was formed with intention, redeemed with purpose, and called with love. When I am tempted to measure myself by what I do or how I look or what others think, bring me back to this truth: I am Yours. Let that be enough. Let that be everything. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Set aside ten minutes today to open your Bible and search for the names and identities God gives His people in Scripture — names such as Beloved (Colossians 3:12), Chosen (1 Peter 2:9), Redeemed (Isaiah 43:1), Child of God (John 1:12), and New Creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). Write each one down in a journal or on a notecard, and beside each name, write: “This is who God says I am.” Place the list somewhere you will see it each morning, and speak those names over yourself aloud before you face the day. This is not positive thinking — it is Scripture-rooted, Spirit-empowered truth-telling. Let God’s Word be the first voice you hear.
