Jesus Slept in the Storm — and He Is Still at Peace in Yours
There is something quietly staggering about the image of Jesus asleep in the boat — because it may be the most comforting picture in all of Scripture.
Key Scripture
“As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.” Luke 8:23
Reflection
The disciples were not timid men. Several of them were seasoned fishermen who had navigated the Sea of Galilee their whole lives. When they panicked, the storm was genuinely terrifying. Waves crashed over the hull. The boat groaned. And yet, in the stern, Jesus slept.
It would be easy to read His sleeping as absence — as though God had turned away at the worst possible moment. But the opposite is profoundly true. Jesus was not absent. He was there, fully present in the vessel, closer than the storm itself. His sleep was not indifference; it was the visible expression of perfect, unshakeable peace. The Prince of Peace, resting in the middle of chaos, was demonstrating something the disciples desperately needed to see: that the presence of Jesus in the boat changes what the storm can ultimately do.
Think about what His sleep actually meant theologically. It meant He had no anxiety about the outcome. It meant the wind and waves held no authority over Him that He did not willingly allow. Colossians 1:17 tells us that in Christ “all things hold together” — including, one suspects, storm-battered fishing boats on the Sea of Galilee. He was not asleep because He had forgotten the disciples. He was asleep because He knew something they had not yet learnt: that when the Son of God is in your vessel, you will reach the other shore.
This is the posture Jesus is gently calling us into today. Not frantic striving, not white-knuckled spiritual performance, not the exhausting cycle of praying harder to convince God to finally notice our crisis — but rest. Philippians 4:7 speaks of a peace “which transcends all understanding”, and that peace is not a feeling we manufacture; it is a Person we trust. When life feels as though it is being swamped, the invitation of the gospel is not to row faster. It is to look to the stern, where Jesus is, and remember that He has never once lost a boat He was riding in.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I have let the noise of the storm drown out the reality of Your presence. I confess that I have often acted as though You were far off, as though my panic were more real than Your peace. Today I choose to believe that You are in this boat with me — not asleep from indifference, but resting in the certainty of Your own sovereign love. Quiet the fear in my chest. Let Your peace, which passes all understanding, stand guard over my heart and my mind. Teach me to rest in You, not because the storm has stopped, but because You are here and that is enough. In Your glorious name, Amen.
Today’s Action Step
Identify the one situation in your life that is causing you the most anxiety right now. Write it down, and beneath it write these words: “Jesus is in this boat.” Place it somewhere visible today — your phone screen, your desk, your kitchen window — as a tangible reminder that His presence has not wavered, and His peace is available to you in this very moment. Then, rather than striving for a solution today, spend five minutes simply sitting quietly in His presence and practising trust.
