The Table Jesus Sets for You in Front of Your Enemies
The table Jesus sets for you in front of your enemies is one of the most scandalous, glorious images in all of Scripture — and it is set specifically for you, right now, in the middle of your battle.
Key Scripture
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” Psalm 23:5
Reflection
Picture the scene. The enemies are still there. The opposition has not packed up and left. The situation has not been resolved, the relationship has not been mended, the diagnosis has not changed. And yet — God sets a table. Not after the battle. Not once the coast is clear. Right there, in the thick of it, with opposition on every side, the Lord of heaven and earth pulls up a chair and says, sit down and eat.
This is not accidental imagery. In the ancient Near East, to share a meal was to share in honour, covenant, and protection. When God prepares a table before your enemies, He is making a public declaration: this person belongs to Me. The enemies are not seated at the table — you are. They are forced to watch as the God of the universe lavishes favour upon you. The anointing oil speaks of consecration and dignity. The overflowing cup speaks of abundance that refuses to be contained. God is not being stingy or cautious. He is being extravagant, on purpose, in front of the very people or forces that sought to diminish you.
This table finds its richest fulfilment in Jesus Christ. When our Lord gathered His disciples in the upper room, He spread a table in the shadow of the cross — with betrayal sitting at His very elbow and death looming at the door. He did not wait for a more convenient moment. He broke the bread and poured the cup and said, this is My body, this is My blood, given for you. The Lord’s Supper is the ultimate expression of Psalm 23:5. Jesus feasts with His people precisely at the point of the greatest enemy — sin and death — and declares victory before the resurrection has even come. Every time we come to the communion table, we are sitting down at that same feast, proclaiming that Christ has overcome and that His provision is ours, even now.
Here is the bold and beautiful truth the Lord wants you to receive today: you do not have to wait for your enemies to disappear before you start feasting. Waiting for perfect circumstances before you receive God’s goodness is a trap. The table is already set. The anointing is already poured. The cup is already overflowing. Your enemy — whether that is fear, illness, injustice, grief, or spiritual opposition — does not get to be the gatekeeper of your joy. Jesus has already secured your place at the table. The invitation is not come when things calm down. The invitation is come, right now, as you are, in the middle of it all. Boldly receive what He has prepared for you.
Prayer
Lord, I confess that I have sometimes waited for the storm to pass before I let myself receive Your goodness. Forgive me for treating Your abundance as something I must earn or something I can only enjoy once my circumstances improve. Today I choose to sit at the table You have prepared for me. I receive Your anointing. I receive Your overflowing cup. I declare that my enemies — seen and unseen — do not have authority over the feast You have set. Thank You, Jesus, for the cross, for the empty tomb, and for the table that proclaims Your victory over everything that has come against me. I receive Your love with boldness today. Amen.
Today’s Action Step
Today, before you do anything to resolve or escape your current struggle, deliberately take five minutes to thank God for three specific blessings He has placed in your life right now — in the middle of the difficulty. Write them down, speak them out loud, and let the act of gratitude be your way of pulling up a chair at the table Jesus has already set for you.
