Touching the Hem of Jesus
There are moments when faith does not look like confidence — it looks like a trembling hand reaching forward in a crowd, hoping no one notices, praying only that it is enough.
Key Scripture
“She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.” Luke 8:44
Reflection
For twelve long years, this woman had suffered. She had spent everything she had on physicians, endured the indignity of her condition, and lived under the weight of ceremonial uncleanness that kept her cut off from community, from the temple, and from the ordinary warmth of human touch. She was not merely unwell — she was invisible, exhausted, and likely deeply ashamed. Yet on the day she heard Jesus was passing by, something inside her refused to stay still.
She did not push to the front of the crowd. She did not call out His name or demand His attention. She came from behind — quietly, carefully, perhaps even fearfully. There was no polished confession of faith, no theological declaration. There was only a desperate, wordless reach towards the edge of His garment. And yet, that reach was more than enough. Jesus stopped. He felt power go out from Him. In a surging crowd where dozens must have brushed against Him, He sensed this one touch as something entirely different. Her need had made contact with His power, and heaven responded.
What this tells us about Jesus is breathtaking. He was not waiting for her to compose herself. He was not requiring boldness, eloquence, or a clean spiritual record before He would act. He felt her faith — not her worthiness, not her credentials, but her faith — and He turned towards her. When she finally came forward, trembling, and told Him everything, He did not rebuke her for approaching Him from behind. He called her “daughter.” In one word, He restored her identity, her belonging, and her dignity.
If you have been approaching God from behind — quietly, half-hidden, unsure you even have the right to reach — this story is for you. You do not need to arrive before God with polished prayers or a heart free of doubt. You need only reach. The hem of Jesus is not reserved for the confident. It is close enough for the desperate. It is close enough for the broken. It is close enough for you, right where you are today.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that You never missed her reach — and that You will not miss mine. I come to You today not with great confidence, but with great need. I have felt too ashamed to call out, too weak to push through, too broken to believe I deserve Your attention. But Your Word tells me that You felt her faith, and I trust that You feel mine too. Turn to me, Lord. Call me by name. Let Your power meet me in this quiet, trembling moment of reaching out. Restore what has been lost, heal what has been broken, and remind me that I am Your child. In Your mighty and merciful name, amen.
Today’s Action Step
Take one minute today to sit quietly before God and, in your own words — however simple or raw — tell Him exactly what you have been too ashamed or afraid to say. You do not need to dress it up. Just reach.
