You Are Not Too Late
The story of last-minute grace and the thief on the cross is one of the most breathtaking moments in all of Scripture — a dying man, a final breath, and a Saviour who said yes.
Key Scripture
“Jesus answered him, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.'” Luke 23:43
Reflection
Consider what this man had to offer. No baptism certificate. No church attendance record. No years of faithful service or sacrificial giving. He had a criminal charge above his head and nails through his wrists. All he brought to Jesus was a desperate, honest cry — “Remember me.” And that was enough.
This is the part that should stop us in our tracks. We live in a world that rewards résumés, track records, and earned credentials. Even in Christian circles, it can be easy to quietly believe that God is more pleased with those who have served longer, sinned less, or prayed more faithfully. But the thief on the cross dismantles that entire framework in a single exchange. Grace, it turns out, is not a reward for the prepared. It is a gift for the desperate.
Notice the word Jesus chose: today. Not “eventually, after you’ve had time to prove yourself.” Not “perhaps, if things work out.” Today. In that one word, Jesus revealed something profound about how grace operates — it does not run on human timelines or honour human expectations of fairness. The thief had minutes left. Jesus gave him eternity. Grace does not keep office hours. It does not close its doors at the end of a long life of wandering. It meets you exactly where you are, even in your final moments.
Perhaps you are reading this and you feel like you have wasted too much time, made too many mistakes, or wandered too far to ever truly come home. The thief on the cross is God’s answer to that feeling. Jesus did not turn to look at the crowd and say, “Let’s see if he’s worthy.” He turned to a dying man and welcomed him into paradise. If that does not fill you with wonder, read it again. This is the gospel — raw, unearned, and gloriously free. You are not too late.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that You do not require a polished record or a perfect past. Thank You that even in the final moments of a broken life, You said yes. I confess that I have sometimes believed my failures were bigger than Your grace — forgive me for that small view of You. Today, I come to You just as I am, with nothing to offer but my need. Like the thief, I ask You simply: remember me. You are my only hope, and You are more than enough. Amen.
Today’s Action Step
Think of one person in your life — perhaps someone you have quietly written off as “too far gone” — and pray specifically for them today, asking Jesus to remind them, as He reminded the thief, that it is never too late to turn to Him. Then, if the opportunity arises, share with them the story of the thief on the cross and let the grace of that moment do what only grace can do.
