Your Ordinary Monday Is Sacred Ground: A Devotional

Your Ordinary Monday Is Sacred Ground

Finding God in everyday life is not a spiritual bonus for the especially devout — it is the normal, beautiful calling of every believer in Christ.

Key Scripture

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV)

Reflection

There is a lie that quietly settles into the hearts of many Christians: that Sunday is sacred and Monday is simply ordinary. We sing worship songs, feel the warmth of God’s presence, and then step back into the noise of the working week feeling spiritually invisible — as though God has stayed behind in the church building while we trudge off to the school run, the inbox, and the washing up.

But Colossians 3:23-24 shatters that false divide completely. Paul does not say, “Whatever spiritual activity you do.” He says, whatever you do. The spreadsheet. The nappy change. The difficult phone call. The commute. Every single one of these can be offered to Christ as an act of genuine worship when done with a heart surrendered to Him. Jesus does not simply sanctify your Sunday — He sanctifies your entire life.

In the seventeenth century, a French monk named Brother Lawrence discovered this truth in the most unremarkable of places: the monastery kitchen. Assigned to washing dishes — a task he initially found tedious — he made a radical decision. He would do it for God, with God, aware of God’s presence with every pot he scrubbed. He later wrote, “The time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer.” Brother Lawrence is not remembered for great sermons or miracles. He is remembered for doing ordinary things in extraordinary communion with Jesus.

You may feel spiritually invisible in your routine today. Perhaps you are tired, your work feels thankless, and no one seems to notice the effort you pour out. But Jesus sees. He is not waiting for you to arrive at your next church service to meet with you. He is right there beside the sink, the desk, the school gate — inviting you to consecrate this very moment to Him. Your ordinary Monday is, in truth, sacred ground.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I have treated my ordinary days as spiritually empty. Thank You that Your presence is not confined to a building or a particular hour. As I step into this day — with all its routines, demands, and seemingly small moments — I offer it to You. I choose to work as unto You, not merely for human approval. Let every task be an act of worship. Remind me throughout this day that I am never invisible to You, and that Your eyes are on me with love. May my ordinary life bring You extraordinary glory. Amen.

Today’s Action Step

Before you begin your first task this morning, pause for sixty seconds and pray this simple framework over your day: Consecrate — “Lord, I offer this day to You.” Acknowledge — “I invite Your presence into every task.” Commit — “I will work as unto You, not for approval or recognition.” Write these three words on a sticky note and place it somewhere you will see it throughout the day. Let it be your reminder that finding God in everyday life begins with one intentional moment of surrender.
