Zacchaeus Climbed a Tree to See Jesus — Will You?

Zacchaeus and the Sycamore Tree

Sometimes a desperate hunger for Jesus will make you do something that looks completely ridiculous — and that might be exactly the point.

Key Scripture

“He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.” Luke 19:3-4

Reflection

Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector — wealthy, powerful, and deeply unpopular. The crowd around Jesus almost certainly had no intention of making room for him. So he did something that no self-respecting man of his status would ever do: he hitched up his robes and scrambled up a tree like a child. In front of everyone. And he didn’t care.

There is something wonderfully piercing about that image. Zacchaeus wasn’t performing worship or following a religious formula. He was simply, desperately hungry to see Jesus — and that hunger overrode every concern about dignity, reputation, and what the neighbours might think. His need was greater than his pride. That is a profound kind of faith, even if he didn’t yet know it was faith at all.

Here is the breathtaking part: Jesus stopped. Out of an entire jostling crowd, Jesus looked up into that tree and called Zacchaeus by name. He didn’t walk past the man who had gone out of his way. He never does. Scripture shows us again and again that Jesus is drawn to the person who pushes through the crowd, who cries out louder when told to be quiet, who climbs a tree when they cannot see. Jesus always stops for the one who goes to extraordinary lengths to reach Him.

So what is your sycamore tree? For some, it might be returning to church after years away — awkward, uncomfortable, and vulnerable. For others, it could be opening a Bible for the first time in decades, joining a prayer group where you know nobody, or dropping to your knees in honest, stumbling prayer with no polished words at all. The tree looks different for everyone. But the invitation is the same: make the move, however foolish it feels, and watch Jesus stop and look up at you.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I confess that I have sometimes let pride, fear, or the opinions of others keep me from pursuing You wholeheartedly. Forgive me for the times I stayed safely in the crowd when You were calling me to climb higher. Today I choose to reach for You, even if it looks ridiculous, even if I feel out of place, even if no one understands. You stopped for Zacchaeus, and I trust that You will stop for me too. Call me by name, Lord. I am listening. Amen.

Today’s Action Step

Identify your sycamore tree — the one bold, uncomfortable step toward Jesus you have been putting off — and take it today, even in a small way. Send that message to a church, open your Bible, get on your knees, or make that phone call. Do the thing that hunger for Jesus is nudging you towards, and trust Him to meet you there.
