She Spent Everything on One Moment with Jesus

The Woman Who Spent Everything on One Moment with Jesus

Extravagant worship of Jesus has always made people uncomfortable — but it has never once made Jesus uncomfortable.

Key Scripture

“While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.” Mark 14:3

Reflection

Close your eyes for a moment and step into that room. It is warm. The smell of food and conversation fills the air. Reclining at the table is Jesus — unhurried, present, fully human and fully God wrapped in dusty sandals and road-worn robes. And then she enters. No name announced. No permission asked. Just a woman, a jar, and something she has decided she can no longer keep for herself.

The alabaster jar she carries is not a trinket. Pure nard — imported from the mountains of northern India, sealed carefully, stored faithfully. Scholars estimate its value at nearly a year’s wages. This is not a casual offering. This is everything. And with one decisive, irreversible act, she breaks the neck of the jar and lets it pour. The fragrance fills every corner of the room instantly, the way true worship always does — you cannot ignore it, you cannot contain it, and once it is released, the world is different.

But the critics are there too. Mark tells us that some of those present “rebuked her harshly,” calling her gift wasteful, scolding her for failing to think practically. And perhaps you know those voices. Perhaps you have heard them not just from others, but from a quieter, colder place inside yourself — the voice that says your worship is too loud, too emotional, too costly. The voice that hands you a spreadsheet when your heart wants to break open. The disciples meant well. Practicality is not wrong. But there are moments when Jesus is in the room and practicality becomes the enemy of devotion.

Jesus silences the critics with breathtaking tenderness. “Leave her alone,” He says. “She has done a beautiful thing to me.” He does not merely defend her — He immortalises her. He declares that wherever the gospel is preached, what she has done will be told in memory of her. A nameless woman, an extravagant act, and Jesus ensures she is never forgotten. That is what He does with offerings the world calls wasteful. He calls them beautiful, and He keeps them forever.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I confess that I have sometimes let practicality sit on the throne that belongs only to You. I have calculated when I should have poured. I have measured when I should have broken open. Forgive me for the moments I have listened to the voices in the room rather than looking at Your face. Today, I want to be like her — undignified, unashamed, and utterly undone by who You are. Teach me that nothing given to You is ever wasted. Teach me that You are worth every last drop. Take whatever I have been withholding, Lord, and let it be an offering that fills the room with the fragrance of love. Amen.

Today’s Action Step

Sit quietly for five minutes and ask the Holy Spirit to show you your alabaster jar — the gift, the time, the dream, the resource, or the act of worship you have been holding back out of practicality or fear. Write it down. Then ask Jesus honestly: is this mine to keep, or is this yours to receive? Whatever He shows you, take one small step today toward breaking it open for Him.
